    The GameCube is Nintendo’s first home video game console, and it was intended to be the company’s last.
    Nintendo went into production on the GameCube just a year after it was released, and by early 2001, it had already been relegated to being a secondary system in the company’s lineup. The GameCube suffered from hefty launch costs that pushed its retail price above $200; it didn’t have any major competitors at the time that could challenge its dominance of the mid-market gaming market; and despite its high quality components, especially for its day, games were not as widespread or as accessible as they are on current-generation consoles.

    The GameCube was Nintendo’s first console to use optical discs as a primary storage medium for games. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox were its main rivals.
